The Sweetest Things

There are endless possibilities when designing a cake. It is important to consider a few things before you get started – so here are my suggestions. I call it the D’s of decorating!

DECIDE

Agree on the number of guests that will be in attendance. Your design can be affected by the size of cake you need in order to serve all of your guests. Talk to your cake designer and adjust the circumferences of your cakes to keep your proportions and be right on target.

DISCUSS

Talk to your cake designer about themes for your cake. Are you going for Rhinestones and Feathers, or more of an exact theme like Butterfl ies? From there, work on selecting a shape that compliments your theme. You can choose cakes that are square, round or even heart-shaped.

DECORATE

Next, talk about cake texture. Fondant is very popular, but can be a more expensive option. Butter cream can be an alternative, but it may not be as smooth and beautiful. Next comes your fi lling; make sure you schedule a taste-test to go over the many choices for your sweet stack.

DETAIL

Lastly, the details! This can be the hard part, but you’ve got to be patient. Details can make or break your cake, so here are a few ideas for detail:

• Color:

Are you sticking with white, a bold color or a fabulous metallic?

• Personal Touch:

Will you be adding written initials or silver rhinestone letters?

• Pattern:

Are you matching your cake to your dress with a lace design or maybe you have a print that matches your decor?

• Flowers:

Are you decorating your cake with fresh flowers or sugar flowers?

• Out of the Box:

Are you thinking of a cake shaped like a purse or cupcake cake?

So what are you waiting for? Building a masterpiece with endless possibilities can be exciting. Get creative with your cake designer and start early. Whatever you decide, just don’t get all 1990’s on us and add bridges and fountains and plastic Quince couples. That would be passé and a visual disaster! By the end, you’re at my favorite D of all… DONE!

Blooms and Buds

WAIT ON THAT DATE!

If you are fl exible on the date of your Quince, you can save a bundle! Avoid a month like February or May and save a ton! Roses can be so expensive during those months that you could totally blow your budget if you are not careful. Sorry to my February and May babies out there, but you don’t want to break the bank!

FLOWER 411

Did you know that some fl owers are impossible to get during certain months? Have your fl orist give you information on fl owers and their availability or seasons. Spring is great for Peonies and Summer is wonderful for Hydrangeas. Narrow down your choices before you even get started.

GET SEVERAL QUOTES:

It can be hard to stay within your budget – but don’t be discouraged. Request several quotes before you sign on the dotted line and remember to read the fi ne print. There are a few charges that may vary from vendor to vendor and delivery charges are one of them. Depending on how far your vendor is from your venue, the charge could be signifi cantly higher.

FLUFF AND FILL!

Filler fl owers are your budget’s best friends. Scale back on the number of fl owers you use in your arrangement by incorporating a few fi ller fl owers. There are tons of greenery options that will give your fl oral piece a fuller look while giving your wallet a break!

50/50

Make two different centerpieces: a large version and a small version. Alternating centerpieces can give you a bit of variety and can also reduce your costs. Selecting two options for the centerpiece allows for budget flexibility and still provides visual appeal. It’s the best of both mundos!

GLASS OR PLASTIC:

Here is a huge money saving tip for my frugal chicas! Save money on your centerpiece vases by asking your florist to give you a few options in a couple of different price ranges. Clear plastic vases are more affordable and some vases are hardly even seen. Depending on your arrangement, you may be able to choose one that is less expensive, but still beautiful!
