There are endless possibilities when designing a cake. It is important to consider a few things before you get started – so here are my suggestions.
I call it the D’s of decorating!
DECIDE
Agree on the number of guests that will be in attendance. Your design can be affected by the size of cake you need in order to serve all of your guests. Talk to your cake designer and adjust the circumferences of your cakes to keep your proportions and be right on target.
DISCUSS
Talk to your cake designer about themes for your cake. Are you going for Rhinestones and Feathers, or more of an exact theme like Butterfl ies? From there, work on selecting a shape that compliments your theme. You can choose cakes that are square, round or even heart-shaped.
DECORATE
Next, talk about cake texture. Fondant is very popular, but can be a more expensive option. Butter cream can be an alternative, but it may not be as smooth and beautiful. Next comes your fi lling; make sure you schedule a taste-test to go over the many choices for your sweet stack.
DETAIL
Lastly, the details! This can be the hard part, but you’ve got to be patient. Details can make or break your cake, so here are a few ideas for detail:
• Color:
Are you sticking with white, a bold color or a fabulous metallic?
• Personal Touch:
Will you be adding written initials or silver rhinestone letters?
• Pattern:
Are you matching your cake to your dress with a lace design or maybe you have a print that matches your decor?
• Flowers:
Are you decorating your cake with fresh flowers or sugar flowers?
• Out of the Box:
Are you thinking of a cake shaped like a purse or cupcake cake?
So what are you waiting for? Building a masterpiece with endless possibilities can be exciting. Get creative with your cake designer and start early. Whatever you decide, just don’t get all 1990’s on us and add bridges and fountains and plastic Quince couples. That would be passé and a visual disaster! By the end, you’re at my favorite D of all… DONE!
